Benefits of CO2 Laser Surgery with the OmniGuide® BeamPath® System

OmniGuide’s BeamPath products give surgeons the precision and control of CO2 laser energy for minimally invasive surgery.  By combining the most precise surgical laser with the least traumatic surgical approaches, physicians may avoid open surgery, shorten recovery times, and deliver better outcomes.

Surgeons are treating patients with this device in Gynecology for endometriosis and uterine fibroids; in ENT for cancer, airway papilloma, tracheal stenosis, and ear surgery; and in Neurosurgery for brain and spinal cord tumors.

What is Laser Surgery?

Medical lasers provide physicians a welcome alternative to electrical surgical instruments that use high frequency electricity to cut tissue and stop bleeding.

Laser energy is concentrated light, both visible and invisible, delivered through thin fibers, from an operative microscope, or through a scanner to the patient’s treatment site.  The light heats the target tissue – either vaporizing it or shutting down the blood vessels inside.  The type of laser (by the wavelength of light it emits) determines the way and type of tissue it affects.

Common medical laser applications include eye surgery, skin resurfacing, prostate surgery, and kidney stones – each procedure using a different type of laser and its own approach to the surgical site.  Fiber-optic delivery of some medical lasers gives surgeons an option to deliver energy to tissue utilizing minimally invasive approaches.

Why Surgery with the CO2 Laser?

CO2 lasers have long been considered a gold standard for safety and precision among medical lasers due to their precise interaction with tissue.  CO2 laser energy is readily absorbed in water (the main component of living cells), allowing it to vaporize tissue very efficiently.  Its efficient vaporization leads to minimal thermal spread and collateral tissue injury.

The chart illustrates the differences in tissue spread between different medical lasers.

How does this lead to a better surgical outcome for you?  By limiting the amount of injury around the surgical site, surgeons may limit damage to critical healthy tissue, limit the amount of post-operative pain and swelling, and improve the results you or your loved ones will experience.

Why OmniGuide?

Though CO2 laser energy offers significant benefits over other advanced surgical energies, CO2 laser has been limited to only a few clinical applications by its inability to travel through a traditional fiber-optic device.

OmniGuide’s novel technology, the BeamPath® system, enables flexible delivery of CO2 laser energy to the human body for the first time, even in deep holes and previously difficult to reach regions.  Placing control of this advanced energy at the fingertips of the surgeon, this precision instrument empowers surgeons to achieve higher level of surgical efficacy and patient comfort.

Though the technology is cutting edge, these products have already been used to treat tens-of-thousands of patients in minimally invasive, microsurgical, laparoscopic, and robot-assisted procedures.
